Smoke Magazine

I thought I would share with you my recent application for a new job as Creative Director for Smoke Magazine, which is the student Magazine for the University Of Westminster. Recently five jobs opened up within the editorial team as the magazine is going through a massive redesign and re-launch in September.

The role I applied for is Creative Director, which is basically the designer of the magazine – the person who makes the layouts for the whole magazine and creates the overall look. I decided for my application that instead of writing a 300 word summary, I would make one instead to show them what I can do on inDesign… and here’s the finished result (:

Smoke summary

This took me a good few hours to put together today, as the problem with programmes such as InDesign or Photoshop is that if you don’t use them for a while you forget how they work. It’s not like driving which you stop and start at any time. I’m thinking of maybe using this approach again in September for industry work experience when I go back to uni. I think when applying for a big organisation (which is where I’m aiming) you really need to stand out and grab their attention quickly.

Fingers crossed I get it, but I know that a lot of very talented people have also applied so we’ll have to wait and see!

I should be blogging again soon, I’m just getting used to my work routine again and trying to break out of the habit of sleeping in the day and working at night. I’m also already starting to think about going away again for my birthday in September! Itchy feet already and I’ve only been back at work three days haha!
